WHO PUT THE HELL IN SHELL 4/24/06
What do you get when you cross sh*t with hell? Answer: The Shell Inn. This week’s adventures in good music hammers home the truth that it ain’t all tits and champagne.Friday night was a typical gig at the Kilcar with our friend and power forward,
Gary 7 (Nowik) on the trap kit. Nick and I traded off on bass and guitar and the goofball who was born in 1962 made his usual drunken tribute to his birth year. We’ll be back on Friday, May 19 and other dates thru the summer.
Saturday (4/22) , started with a nice wedding in Broadway Joe’s at The Pepsi Arena. The affair was mellow and with most gigs of this type there is little playing and lots of hanging around. Our friend Brian Fitzpatrick joined us on the lead guitar and Kenny drummed the first of two gigs that day.
This leads me to the second half of that fateful Saturday in April, The Shell Inn, or as it is listed in the phone book just Shell Inn. Located in rural Albany county it’s listed address varied from Westelo to East Berne to Rensselearville, depending on who’s asking. Shell Inn is what I like to refer to as a wild west show, no law men around and the house rules are minimal and enforced by the patrons. You know things are bleak when you see the barred list of “customers” that is larger than the fire marshal’s capacity for the joint.
I took this gig thru the web site with no prior knowledge of their fine establishment, but as we pulled up their sign said it all. WOMAN’S PUDDING WRESTLING AND MECHANICAL BULL RIDING. The band did it’s job and rocked a room of locals also known collectively as a full set of teeth. The main event was a birthday party for a young man who by the time we left had gotten piss drunk, climbed in the pudding, tackled a girl in the pudding, got beat up and thrown out of the bar and was trying to recover enough to come back in to see the strippers he had hired for his own party. Ain’t that America home of the free.
Boy was Elliot Spitzer on the money when he declared parts of upstate NY resemble Appalachia. To paraphrase David St. Hobbins, I shant work there again. For a laugh you can read the county health report on line at www.albanycounty.com/departments/health/RestaurantInspections I recommend you avoid the raw bar.
Next show is Friday, May 5, Geo solo at Keilty Emerald Isle in Waterford which is like Manhattan compared to Shell Inn.
Peace and Love
